Impact of odorant compounds on dog food choice

Dogs have a very accurate olfaction system greatly influencing food selection and intake. The identification of dog food key odorant compounds is thus crucial to increase knowledge on dogs feeding behavior and preferences.

The study presented in this poster evaluated the interest of using the False Bottom Bowl method to assess the impact of simple odorant molecules on dog food choice. Results show that dogs are able to perceive odor modifications induced by some simple volatile compounds placed under the false bottom bowl in food conditions, and that these modifications can lead to food choice variations.
