Combining incomplete cyclic design with composite central design to optimize pets' food preferences assessment

Paired comparisons are the golden standard to measure pet food palatability and to assess the preferences of cats and dogs. The Bradley-Terry-Luce model is the most common to analyze paired comparison data. However, the simplicity of this model is counterbalanced by the high number of pairs that each subject needs to evaluate to obtain robust results.

During his talk, Julien will show the interest of combining an incomplete cyclic design and  a composite central design to assess dogs’ food preferences. Beyond time and cost saving, this approach allows pet food sensory scientists to decrease the number of tests performed with animals while keeping a high level of reliability.
